Dear supporters – due to ongoing security concerns and insurgencies in Egypt, the race organiser were forced to move the race to the Eastern Desert. As a result of this I have decided to postpone my attendance and will try again in 2016 or beyond.
Egypt, White Desert here we come!
After finishing first over the line in both the 100km and 50km Sydney Coastreks 3 years in a row, it is time for a new challenge. The White Desert in Western Egypt is calling; running unassisted and non-stop for 260km across some of the most inhospitable terrain on this planet just sounds about right. Hello Ocean Floor Race 2015!
About the Ocean Floor Race
The OFR is a non-stop race where I will have to rely on my navigation skills and my GPS to find the 10 checkpoints along the way for life-essential re-supplies of water and food.
With only 96 hours to cover some of the most inhospitable and, at the same time, most stunning region on this planet, I should have ample time to not only think about the sense and nonsense of this adventure, but also to reach the finish before the deadline.
Sleep is optional. But drinking is a must, and reaching the next checkpoint in time is a necessity. In the 2014 event, half of the runners did not make it to the finish, and one participant was found semi-conscience almost 60km off track. Apparently some runners’ navigation skills weren’t up to scratch!
Why am I doing this?
Silly habbits, like running across the desert, should at least have a meaning, and my goal is to raise money for The Fred Hollows Foundation to support their goal to end avoidable blindness.
Too many poor people need our help – 4 out of 5 blind people don’t need to be, but most of them will die never to have seen their grandchildren, their mother or their father – simply because they do not have access to proper medical health and eye services.
In some countries it costs less then $25 to restore sight – sadly even that amount is out of reach for millions of poor people. You can help changing this. Your donation will have a real impact where it is needed the most. Help restore sight by supporting my desert run and give generously to The Fred Hollows Foundation.
