Last Sunday was the second time this year that Denis and I drove down South to the Royal National Park to race the Sri Chinmoy Half Marathon, held along a beautiful trail course near the tranquil haven of Willow Tree Flat.
Enveloped by the lush forest and cradled by a constant chorus of birdsong, we started out on a nice cool but sunny Sunday morning. Last May we ended up with muddy legs and wet shoes; last week we trailed faint clouds of dust. Denis was off quick and gone in the distance, whilst I jogged along testing out my new Hoka One One Trail shoes. I decided to take it slow but steady and during the 1hr 50min I kept my pace up and never stopped and only passed other runners. I was happy with the performance, and shoes proved to be comfortable especially downhill.
Denis finished in just over 100min and our new running buddy Marilyse, newly arrived from Paris, ended up in her first race in Australia with a trophy for 5th place in the 10km race.
Next stop is the Big Coast Run in Kamay Botany Bay – 30km to test my race bag for the desert next year and give my handheld GPS a first trial too.
